Axiom Structures were the Structural and Civil Engineers for the refurbishment and redevelopment of the historic Sloane Club building in Chelsea, transforming the existing property into a luxury boutique hotel. The project sought to modernise the internal accommodation while preserving the building’s historic character, requiring extensive alterations to the existing structure to create open, flexible spaces and accommodate new hotel facilities and building services. The centrepiece of the redevelopment was the infilling of the existing courtyard to create a striking new central space beneath a retractable roof. This intervention transformed an underutilised external area into a flexible, all-weather atrium, providing a focal point for the hotel, while seamlessly integrating contemporary engineering within the historic fabric of the building.

The structural design focused on opening up the existing floorplates through the formation of new structural openings and the installation of transfer steelwork to support the revised architectural layout. The works included strengthening existing floors and load-bearing elements, introduction new steel framing, and modifying the structure to accommodate new vertical circulation, plant areas, and MEP services. Careful coordination with the architectural, heritage, and contractor team ensured that structural interventions were efficient, buildable, and sympathetic to the existing to the existing fabric while meeting current UK Building Regulations.
